If you are thinking of beginning lessons with your child, start here! Hopefully this will answer most of your questions. Of course, I don't mind answering them again in person, on the phone or by email too!
What do I need to begin?
In the beginning, we will start with 6 parent education sessions to familiarize you with our studio policies, the Suzuki method, and talk about how young children learn and how to work with them. We will also learn how to hold a violin and learn to play a few of the beginning songs, which you will play on the first pillow concert! (violin students only)
You will need:
-a tuning fork
-a notebook and pencil
-Ability Development From Age Zero by Shinichi Suzuki
-Nurtured by Love by Shinichi Suzuki
-a rented violin and shoulder rest (violin students only)
All supplies are available at Robertsons and Sons Violin Shop. They are located at 3201 Carlisle and they can be reached at (505) 899-2999.
Should I get my child a violin or a cello?
No, not yet. Beginning violin students 5 and under will start on a box violin and then graduate to a real violin later. They will master the most difficult part of the violin first, which is holding the violin and the bow. Beginning cello students start with exercises with a dowel stick representing the bow. Even if your child is older than 5, instrument sizing is very important. We prefer to be fully involved in the process. We will size your child at the first lesson.
How much do lessons cost?
A beginner will start with a 30 minute lesson. The monthly fee is $94.51, which includes tax, and covers 30 lessons between September and May. Tuition will be prorated for students who start later than September.
Separate from tuition is the group lesson fee, which is $295 for the year. This includes weekly group lessons and two concerts.
What are group lessons?
Group lessons are weekly classes in addition to your weekly private lesson. Students will meet in groups arranged by playing level and learn techniques, music reading, ensemble skills and just have fun!
Do we have to have group lessons?
Yes, we require group lessons. They are a fundamental aspect of the Suzuki method. Students really enjoy group lessons because they get to be with other kids their age and play music together. They are hugely motivating. We find that families quickly agree that group lessons are essential.
What is expected of me, the parent?
Parents are expected to attend every lesson and take detailed notes. You will become the "home teacher" during the week and actively practice with your child.
